X – Spiritual Direction

Spiritual directors or advisors accompany other people in their search for what is Holy and important in that person’s (the directee’s) life. The spiritual director’s role is to listen at a deep level and notice the movement of the Holy in a person’s life, reflect back what is being heard, and offer possible thoughts for the deepening of the directee’s spiritual path. Directors notice places where there is a connection with God and also places where there may be a disconnect. Meditation, prayer, spiritual direction groups, reading sources, and reflection are some ways of cultivating and deepening the connection with the Source of Life. God is known to us by many names – most important is that every person make a connection to a source greater than who they are for their own internal guidance.

One method of understanding and helping a spiritual connection to become more profound is through the utilization of the Labyrinth.  A labyrinth is a well-defined circuitous path (different from a maze) that one walks with a goal of calming and addressing psychospiritual needs.  It can be of help in the following ways: approaching and deepening spirituality, connecting to the soul, accessing intuition and creativity, integrating body and spirit, and creating a more intimate connection with community.

My own spiritual path is one of being rooted in the Jewish tradition. I am quite comfortable with the beliefs and practices of others. I utilize a contemplative approach in my presence with the directee, listening deeply for a person’s personal relationship with the Divine. Some people call this soul tending, waiting and listening for the depth of spirit in a person to unfold and connect. I offer both individual and group spiritual direction.

“We are not human beings having a spiritual experience. We are spiritual beings having a human experience.” – Teilhard de Chardin
